Emergency
Vehicle Operators Course (EVOC)
The Oaks Fire Company sponsored
an EVOC training opportunity which required its emergency
vehicle operators and drive trainees to complete classroom
instruction and a hands on drivers exam. This training addressed
emergency vehicle operations as they relate to safe operations
of the various types of fire apparatus used by the Company.
Participants became familiar with or refreshed on the various
aspects of pre-operation checks and post operation checks,
driver responsibilities related to crew safety, defensive
driving tactics and legal responsibilities and liabilities.
After successfully completing the classroom and pre-operation
sessions the drivers were required to successfully demonstrate
their ability to negotiate a driving course that required the
operator to enter an alleyway that had limited clearance on each
side of the vehicle and stop within 8 inches of the stop line
and then back out of the alley. They then had to enter a
restricted area and successfully reverse direction with no more
than 3-turns and then reverse into a loading dock area
also stopping within 8 inches of the stop line. The operators
then negotiated a serpentine course and then repeat the
serpentine in reverse, this section of the test was followed by
a lane change section where the operators had to safely
negotiate a rapid lane change in a restricted area. The next to
last event was to negotiate a lane that narrowed from a standard
traffic lane to a lane just wide enough for the apparatus to
clear the markers. The final event was parallel parking the
apparatus. The majority of the participants completed the course
operating a 27 ton, 32 foot long fire engine. |
